Route 40 Guide

Route 40 is the shoreline route west of Olivine, where the land gives way to the sea path toward Cianwood and, in Crystal, the Battle Tower approach.

Travel the route

Route 40 is the moment Olivine stops being a harbor view and becomes a departure. Step west from Olivine City, hit the beach, and the game asks whether you are ready to treat Surf like a real road.

What to find

Battle Swimmer Simon, Randall, Elaine, and Paula, search for the hidden Hyper Potion, and talk to Monica on Monday for Sharp Beak. Rock Smash can reveal Krabby or Shuckle, while the water and rods bring Tentacool, Tentacruel, Krabby, Corsola, Staryu, and Kingler.

Return with a reason

Return for Cianwood trips, Monday's weekday gift, west-sea fishing, and in Crystal the approach to the Battle Tower.

Surf opens water paths here

Water tiles can become paths once you can Surf.

Bring a Surf user after earning Fog Badge if you want every shoreline path.

Smashable rocks are here

Breakable rocks can block small paths or hide wild encounters.
