Route 40
4 wild Pokémon across 2 encounter methods. 4 trainer battles.
Route 40 Guide
Route 40 is the shoreline route west of Olivine, where the land gives way to the sea path toward Cianwood and, in Crystal, the Battle Tower approach.
Travel the route
Leave Olivine City through Route 40 when you are ready for the sea. The coast starts simple, then quickly turns into the water-heavy travel line that defines Cianwood access.
What matters here
What matters most is the shift in travel style. This is where Surf becomes the rule, and in Crystal it also doubles as the doorstep to the Battle Tower.
Come back later
Return when you want Cianwood access, west-sea exploration, or the Battle Tower side of Crystal's late-game routine.

Map Movement Tips
These clues come from the map tiles, so they are handy when you are planning which moves or paths matter here.
Surf opens water paths here
Water tiles can become paths once you can Surf.
Bring a Surf user after earning Fog Badge if you want every shoreline path.
Smashable rocks are here
Breakable rocks can block small paths or hide wild encounters.
Bring Rock Smash if you want to clear every cracked rock.
Repel Planning
If your lead Pokémon is above a wild level, Repel skips it. These checkpoints show what disappears completely.
