Mount Mortar 1F Outside Guide

Mount Mortar is the big cave system off Route 42, built to feel optional at first and much richer once Surf and Waterfall open it properly.

Getting in

Enter from Route 42 when you first notice the cave, but do not expect to finish everything on the first visit. Mount Mortar is designed to expand as your movement options do.

Main reason to visit

The cave's reason to exist is depth: side rooms, a strong reward deeper in, and a clear invitation to return later with better movement tools. It is one of Johto's best delayed-payoff locations.

Why return

Come back once Surf and the later waterfall work open the cave properly or when you are finishing the eastern mountain side of Johto.
