Route 38
15 wild Pokémon across 3 encounter methods. 9 trainer battles.
Route 38 Guide
Route 38 is the broad westbound road out of Ecruteak, leading toward Olivine and the farm routes beyond.
Travel the route
Travel here when Ecruteak starts opening the west coast. The route carries you out of the city and toward Route 39 with enough trainer pressure to make the shift feel real.
What matters here
The road matters because it is the first true westbound commitment after Ecruteak. Once you are on it, you are basically choosing the Olivine and Cianwood half of Johto for the next chunk of play.
Come back later
Return when you want the west-coast line, another good trainer stretch, or a clean way back into Ecruteak from the Olivine side.

Phone Swarms
Some rare Pokémon appear more often after the right trainer calls you.
Snubbull swarm
Schoolboy Chad can call when this swarm starts.
After you share phone numbers, come back here while the swarm is active.
Roaming Pokémon
The legendary beasts can pass through this route after the Burned Tower basement event.
Possible roamers
Raikou, Entei, Suicune can move through this route once they are released.
Check your Pokégear map, then hunt on land when one is nearby.
Route changes
A roaming beast can move to a nearby route when you change areas, and it can also jump somewhere else.
If it is not here anymore, step between nearby routes and check again.
Nearby jumps
From here, a beast usually moves toward Route 37, Route 39, Route 42.
Use nearby routes to keep chasing without flying away.
Land only
The beasts stay out of Surf encounters, so they do not pop up while you are surfing.
Hunt in grass or on land instead of riding across water.
Map Movement Tips
These clues come from the map tiles, so they are handy when you are planning which moves or paths matter here.
One-way ledges shape the route
These ledges let you jump down but not climb back up from the same spot.
Look before you hop if you are collecting items or avoiding trainers.
