Ilex Forest Guide

Ilex Forest is the famous wooded barrier between Azalea and Goldenrod, packed with the Farfetch’d chase, Cut access, and a denser sense of world detail than most routes get.

Step inside

Ilex Forest is the first place in Johto that asks you to slow down and listen. The path between Azalea Town and Route 34 twists around trees, shrine paths, hidden corners, and a Farfetch'd chase that turns the forest into a small puzzle.

What to do inside

Guide the Farfetch'd back, receive HM01 for Cut, pick up Revive, and search for hidden Ether, Super Potion, and Full Heal. The Charcoal helper gives TM02, and the forest has Caterpie, Metapod, Paras, Zubat, Oddish, Psyduck, Golduck, Poliwag, and strong Headbutt trees depending on time and tools.

Return with a reason

Return when Cut and Surf open more corners, when you want forest encounters, or when the road between Azalea and Goldenrod deserves to feel like a woodland walk instead of a commute.

Cut can open a blocker here

Some small trees or grass blockers can be cleared with Cut.

Bring a Pokémon that knows Cut after earning Hive Badge.

Surf opens water paths here

Water tiles can become paths once you can Surf.

Bring a Surf user after earning Fog Badge if you want every shoreline path.

One-way ledges shape the route

These ledges let you jump down but not climb back up from the same spot.

Look before you hop if you are collecting items or avoiding trainers.
