Professor Elm's Lab Guide

Professor Elm's Lab is where Johto really begins. Three Poké Balls wait on the table, the healing machine hums nearby, and Elm keeps finding new reasons to call you back.

Pick your first partner

Elm's Lab is small, bright, and packed with promise. The door opens at the south end, bookshelves line the walls, and the starter Poké Balls sit together near Elm's desk. Choose Cyndaquil, Totodile, or Chikorita. Each starter is level 5 and holds a Berry.

  • Want to compare first? Open Chikorita, Cyndaquil, or Totodile.
  • Elm adds his phone number after you pick a starter.
  • Use the lab's healing machine after you have a Pokémon.

Take the aide's gifts

Elm's aide helps you at the door, so do not rush past him. He gives you a Potion before your first trip to Route 29. Later, after you bring the Mystery Egg back to Elm, the aide gives you 5 Poké Balls so you can start catching Pokémon.

  • Take the Potion before you leave for Mr. Pokémon's house.
  • Come back after the early errand, talk through the lab event, then leave again for the Poké Balls.

Come back with discoveries

Elm's Lab stays useful after the first morning. Elm studies the Egg, calls when new things happen, and rewards you when your adventure grows.

Check the little details

This lab is busy even when the big rewards are done. Read the travel-tip cards, check the shelves, and peek at the window after the theft call. The police officer also visits the lab and asks about the red-haired kid.

  • The healing machine, travel tips, bookshelves, trash can, and window all have source text.
  • The officer scene happens here after the stolen Pokémon report.
  • When Elm has nothing new to give, he still tells you he will call if anything comes up.

Useful people

Prof. Elm, Elm’s aide, and the officer all matter at different moments.

Best first move

Pick a starter, take Elm’s number, grab the Potion, then head west to Route 29.

Why return

Egg research, Everstone, Master Ball, and S.S. Ticket rewards all come back to this lab.
